Provide a secure and caring community in which children can work happily, learning to respect each other, the school and their environment.

Ensure that each child feels valued and has the self-confidence to discover abilities and strengths.

Our children are the citizens of tomorrow. We aim to foster self-discipline and motivation, responsibility and a sense of belonging to a wider community.

Many of our pupils attend the on-site pre-school group which means they are familiar with many of the routines and people before they start school. Even so, during the term before they start as full-time pupils, children are invited to attend school for an afternoon. In this session the children get to know the other children in their class, the staff and the layout of the school.

Children generally start school in September. If parents have a particular concern, arrangements can be made for half-day attendance and delay starting until January, or somewhere in between the two, until confidence and maturity have grown.

On entry the children join the Foundation Stage of the Infant class, progressing later through Years 1 and 2. The Infant class is taught by Mrs Jane Jones, with Higher Level Teaching Assistant help every day from Mrs Rebecca Nelson.

The Infant room provides the children with a bright and stimulating area, with far reaching views across the Dales. There is access to the nature garden which is used for outdoor learning and play activities and also has a suite of fully networked computers.

If you are considering Beamsley Primary School for your child, please arrange a visit. We will be happy to show you around, introduce you to staff and pupils and answer any questions. We see parents as partners in children’s learning. We value your opinions and the information only you can give us.

Pupils are taught in three classes:
Key Stage 1 (4+ to 7+ years) - Foundation Stage, Y1 and Y2
Lower KS2 (7+ to 9+ years) - Y3 and Y4,
Upper KS2 (9+ to 11+) - Y5 and Y6

Each class has its own separate teaching and learning area.
Two Teaching Assistants and a significant number of helpers help the teaching staff by providing structured and focused support in Literacy and Numeracy for specific Year groups each day.
We have 12 networked computers
We have a hall which is used for the pre-school group in the mornings and for PE and music in the afternoons. KS2 children also have the use of the swimming pool and Sports Hall at Upper Wharfedale School for two hours each week.

The full range of curriculum subjects are taught in school with particular emphasis on Mathematics and English, which are taught for at least one hour every day. Other areas of learning are addressed throughout the year, including Personal and Social Development, Health awareness and thinking skills.

Some subjects are taught separately and some are taught together as part of a theme. Pupils within a class usually all work at the same time on similar aspects of a subject but at different levels appropriate to their age and ability. In this way we can ensure that each pupil is challenged and extended.

The successful teaching of English develops a pupil’s ability to communicate effectively, both orally and through the written word. The acquisition of English skills is crucial to the learning that takes place in all areas of the curriculum and as such it has the highest priority.

Reading, writing, speaking and listening skills take up a major amount of each pupil’s time. Information texts, fictional stories, playscripts and poems all form part of the English programme of study. Time is allocated on a weekly basis to the learning of the more formal aspects of grammar, spelling , handwriting and dictionary work. Children then practise these skills in class and as homework. Pupils are given the chance to read each day and are encouraged to take their reading books home. Pupils keep a reading journal which also acts as a home/school book.

In the summer term in Years 3, 4 and 5 optional SATs papers are used to assess pupils’ reading, writing and spelling attainment against national standards.

At all stages, children are encouraged to read widely, for enjoyment as well as for information. The aim is for pupils to become life-long readers. Parents are regularly informed of their child’s progress and ways in which they can give support.

The school has a range of carefully chosen books and computer software to develop language skills amongst children of all abilities.

In order to secure a real understanding of mathematics the emphasis is very much on practical activities first. Written methods of calculation are not encouraged until pupils demonstrate sound understanding of a range of mental strategies. At all stages they are encouraged to explain their thinking to others and to work confidently in pairs or in a group. Oral work forms an important part of each day’s teaching.

The teaching at Beamsley School closely follows the Numeracy Strategy and its emphasis on the more efficient ‘linear’ methods of calculation for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children are taught to understand why they are doing things in a certain way.

From Y3 onwards there is an emphasis upon the quick recall of number bonds, including the learning by heart of multiplication tables to 10x10.

As in English, Years 3, 4 and 5 are assessed using optional STA’s papers in the summer term to determine each pupil’s attainment in relation to national standards. This helps greatly towards pinpointing areas of strength as well as development in individual pupils, and details of progress are given to parents each term and in the annual summer report.

We encourage curiosity, enjoyment and the acquisition of skills alongside a growing understanding of science through an approach in which children investigate and raise questions about the world in which they live. Practical observation and enquiry leads children to study the three strands: Life processes and living things, materials and their properties and physical processes (forces/light and sound/space)

Knowledge and understanding of these subjects centre around investigating and making, exploring and developing ideas and evaluating and developing what has been achieved. Pupils are given plenty of opportunity to see and experience the work of other artists and craftspeople.

Work is often planned to link in with other subjects across the curriculum. Pupils work with an extensive range of materials, and exhibit their work at the Grassington Festival and the Cluster Schools Art Show as well as in our own school.

The school is well placed to explore these subjects locally, as there is a wealth of interesting archaeology to be found here, as well as spectacular limestone scenery. Pupils participate in field trips in the surrounding environment to reinforce their learning, supported by educational personnel from the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Bolton Abbey Estate, and other school in our cluster.

The school has twelve networked PCs and swift access to the internet via Broadband. Teaching and learning is enhanced in all subjects with the use of Interactive Whiteboards. Pupils use an ever-increasing range of software packages in the course of their work. Staff are involved in regular ICT training to maintain and develop their expertise. At the beginning of the school year parents are asked to sign an internet access agreement with school, this helps us to ensure the internet is not used inappropriately.

All pupils develop a well-rounded appreciation of music through weekly music lessons which include composing, listening and performing. Peripatetic teachers are available to teach individuals and groups in keyboard, woodwind and guitar. Recorders are taught by school staff. Musical and dramatic performances are staged for the enjoyment of parents and the wider community on a regular basis and are a platform for displaying talent and developing pupils’ confidence.

We have a sports field attached to the school as well as well as a small hall and a good sized playground, so PE activities can continue regardless of the weather.
Junior children travel to Upper Wharfedale School once a week for sports and swimming lessons in their newly built sports hall.
Cluster school games activities are arranged throughout the year incorporating football, netball, rounders tennis, golf, cross country running and athletics according to the season.
We also have school rugby training courtesy of Upper Wharfedale Rugby Club, and equipment in school for a wide range of sports. Children may also attend after school sports club.

Religious education is taught according to the aims of the North Yorkshire Agreed Syllabus, which is drawn up by a local conference of teachers, local churches and faith groups and the LEA. It clearly states that Religious Education should not seek to urge religious beliefs. We regularly draw on the expertise of our local church community to widen the pupils’ experience. The syllabus each year is comprised of topics related to:
  1. Christianity
  2. Major world religions e.g. Islam, Judaism, Buddhism
  3. A general study eg sacred journeys, buildings, texts
Assemblies take place daily, held by staff, pupils, the local clergy and invited visitors. Parents may choose to withdraw their children from assembly and RE after talking to the Headteacher.

These areas are taught throughout both key stages in the context of PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), and then more specifically in Year 5 and 6, when reproduction in plants and animals (including human beings) is taught in the context of life cycles in science lessons. Issues which are raised outside these lessons are dealt with sensitively and with consideration of the pupils’ age. The school nurse visits regularly to discuss health matters. If you have any concerns about this please discuss them with the teaching staff.

The school believes that the majority of pupils will learn and progress within the general framework of teaching arrangements in the school. Those that have difficulty may have special educational needs. Pupils with SEN are entitled to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum and access to all activities connected with the school. Parents are kept fully informed and consulted at all stages, we believe the relationship between parents and school is crucial to the progress of any child, but especially if that child has SEN.

The Upper Wharfedale Primary Schools have an effective network that enables us to share expertise and resources that everyone can draw upon; children, parents, teachers and governors take part in many shared experiences. Our children share residential visits, outdoor pursuits and regular curriculum events involving all subject areas.
All our schools are small. This helps us to provide an education aimed at the children’s abilities rather than their age. Mixed age groups within each class enable us to offer appropriate programme of work within a sensitive environment.
Our highly motivated staff, lead by teaching heads, respond with intelligence and commitment to the challenge of teaching in a society which is rapidly transforming through technological advancement.
The Upper Wharfedale Cluster has recently achieved the Investor in People award in recognition of its commitment to the training and development of its staff.
In addition to delivering the National Curriculum, our children’s learning is enriched by our links with local
people, industry, craftspeople and the wonderful environment in which we are situated.
As a group we have successfully bid for money to help us develop our network. We currently have funding to develop teaching and learning in Mathematics. Additional funding enables headteacher to meet to discuss policy and practice and provides training for all staff.
We also have funding to introduce the teaching of a Modern Foreign Language (French). We are working closely with the MFL department of Upper Wharfedale School to ensure all our children have an excellent start to learning languages.

Our cluster has many shared resources. We buy expensive but infrequently used items as a group. We have a wide range of group reading books, musical instruments, TOPS sports bags, artefacts from the major world religions and interactive display materials that can be used by all of our schools.

National STAs tests are taken each year for Y2 pupils in KS1 and Y6 pupils in KS2. In years when we have fewer than ten pupils in the cohort, our results are not published for reasons of pupil confidentiality.

We encourage parents, whenever possible, to take holidays in school holiday periods. If, unavoidably, you cannot do so, then please ask school for a holiday request form in advance. The governing body are legally only allowed to authorise ten days holiday for individual pupils each academic year. Any absences exceeding this limit have to be recorded as unauthorised.

We expect high standards of good behaviour. We would like our pupils to be courteous, sensitive and thoughtful towards others. Pupils’ views about all aspects of school life are sought in a variety of ways: at assembly, discussion times and in PSHE (personal, social and health education). Pupils regularly review the school rules on behaviour, with staff. ‘Good Work’ assembly on Fridays also acknowledges good behaviour and good work in a public way.

Semi-skimmed milk is available at morning break. This is usually paid for half-termly. Children are also provided with bottled water which they are encouraged to drink throughout the day.
In accordance with our healthy eating policy, Infant children have ‘free fruit’ at playtimes. Juniors have a fruit tuck shop and can buy a piece of fruit for 10p per day. We encourage them to do this as many of them have an early start and a long morning , so we feel it is a good idea to have some sustenance half way!

We may, occasionally, ask for voluntary contributions to cover costs of transport and entrance fees for school visits. Children are not excluded from outings if they have not paid. Payments are requested for group or individual lessons involving peripatetic music teachers.

Hot school lunches are available everyday. They are prepared on site by or own cook who ensures the food is healthy and appetising. There is a vegetarian option and fresh fruit and vegetables are available daily. Payment for school lunches can be made on a weekly or half-termly basis.

Lunchtime is a social occasion. We have a family service. Older children serve the meals and encourage younger ones to be well mannered and to try food they may not have tried before.

Beamsley School is fortunate to belong to a very active and supportive cluster of seven schools in the Upper Wharfedale area. Resources and expertise is shared and many events are organised throughout the year to enable pupils of these small schools to socialise and develop friendships outside their normal school environment. Activities include the Y6 residential trip to York, drama and events, technology days, sports and outdoor pursuits.

The school is extremely well supported by parents through the ‘Friends’ group. Our fund raisers are second to none! Many enjoyable activites are set up for pupils, their families and the wider community throughout the year, raising much-needed cash for our small school. We have been able to purchase science equipment, furniture, books, musical instruments and play equipment-through people’s generosity. Parents and friends also subsidise transport for visits, the cost of which would otherwise be prohibitive.

All parents are automatically members of ‘Friends’ so be prepared to become involved in any way you can!

Homework provides an opportunity for parents to help in their child’s learning. Homework should be a stress-free experience for all, helping to encourage a love of learning and investigation. Activities are varied and tie in with termly curriculum themes as well as literacy and numeracy skills. The school has produced a booklet which explains maths calculation methods to parents in able to give them confidence to help their children in modern methods.

Schools are not responsible for the administration of medicine to pupils. If your child needs medicine but is not too ill to be in school, you may come into school yourself to administer it. If this is not possible, staff are willing to help, provided written instructions are sent. Pupils, of course, should never be in possession of their own medicine. Parents must also be prepared to accept that in these circumstances dosages may be missed during the busy school day.

Jackson’s of Silsden operate the school bus service. This is administered by NYCC and is free to pupils who live more than two miles away from school. If you think your child will be using to school bus, please let us know as soon as possible, as it can take up to 6 weeks to arrange a bus pass. Parents living out of catchment have their own arrangements for transport through Jackson’s.

We encourage all children to develop their full intellectual, social and spiritual potential regardless of gender, race or creed. Children are made aware of issues relating to cultural harmony through lessons and assemblies.

Children are encouraged to wear school uniform consisting of grey or black trousers (or skirts for girls), black shoes, white polo shirts and a royal blue school sweatshirt.
For PE, children wear blue shorts and a royal blue T shirt embroidered with the school crests. All items are available at Little’s the school outfitters on Sackville Street in Skipton.
Many children also keep a pair of training shoes in school for playing on the field when the weather is suitable.
